Extension Engaged: "Responsibilities and Liabilities When Using Human Subjects, Animals and Hazardous Materials "

Program Description:
If you use animals, human subjects and hazardous materials in your extension, research or educational programming, you MUST comply with federal, state and university laws and regulations. Failure to do so exposes you to risk or criminal prosecution, lawsuits and other ramifications.

The WSU office of Research Assurances supports WSU faculty and staff to help them understand and comply with rules about the use of human subjects, animals and hazardous materials such as pesticides. Faculty and staff need to know these rules for their own protection.

So join us for this program and learn about your responsibilities and how you can protect yourself from liability, prosecution or other punitive actions.

Extension Engaged: "Sustainable Communities"

Program Description:
This program will take a practical approach to addressing the many issues surrounding community sustainability and explore methods communities can use to plan for sustainability. The program has three objectives: 1) educating cities, counties, and other interested parties about sustainability and the issues surrounding community sustainability; 2) establishing the importance of planning for sustainability at the local scale; and 3) promoting Sustainability Assessment as a tool that cities and counties can utilize to achieve greater sustainability and accountability.

Guests: In-studio guests will include:
- William Budd, PhD: Environmental Planning Specialist and Professor, Division of Governmental Studies and Services and WSU Extension and Department of Political Science and Criminal Justice.

"The Strategic Case for Online Learning: Access, Engagement and Success "
(A national broadcast for the American Distance Education Consortium)

Program Description:
Beginning in 2007 the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation made possible a national initiative focused on the strategic importance of online learning and distance education in higher education. This live national videoconference coming from Washington State University is an opportunity for individuals (at their computers) and in groups participating locally together to:

- interact with university presidents and other national leaders involved in the NASULGC/SLOAN National Online Learning Commission;

- experience real case examples from universities where online learning, distance education and rapid internet interaction made a difference (time to graduation, business and financial strength, disaster recovery, mentoring etc.);

- see how some universities are incorporating this strategic asset in their master plans;

- discuss and raise questions about what works, what doesn't and what leadership in this area requires for the future.

The American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC) is collaborating with Washington State University and Oregon State University in producing the event. The NASULGC Commission, Sloan-C, The University of Nebraska-Lincoln, The Pennsylvania State University, Purdue University, Colorado State University, the Southern Educational Regional Education Board (SREB)and others are participating in marketing, case study development and program planning.

"4H Know Your Government: Statewide Virtual Community Caucus"

Program Description:
Decision 2008 is the focus of Washington State 4-H Know Your Government Conference in Olympia, in February of 2008. This year, participants will explore political parties and the nomination process. Through pre-conference orientation, participants will learn about different political parties and the development of resolutions that support planks that together produce a party platform. On this broadcast, county delegations will present their candidate and platform planks at a Statewide Virtual Community Caucus.

Each county will have approximately 3 minutes to present their planks as best identifying the concerns and issues of 4-H youth across the State, and persuade other counties to adopt these planks to form the Statewide 4-H platform at the conference in Olympia. Planks will be categorized in eightareas: education, immigration, election reform, environment, health care, energy, security & safety and economy and presented at the end of the broadcast. County candidates will be introduced for the first time highlighting the beginning of their campaign.
